Deer Resistant Perennials

Lupins | Deer Resistant PerennialsChoosing deer resistant perennials will discourage them from grazing on only those plants, but if you’re like me, you don’t want to limit your perennial choices in the garden to the short list I provide in this post. Deer can do incredible damage to your gardening efforts. There are many perennials we grow that are highly desirable to deer and this is how we deal with it.

To keep them from eating your prized shrubs, trees, perennials and tulips try using the deer repellent product, “Plantskydd”. We have been using this product on all our perennial gardens for many years and can highly recommend it. It is made from 100% natural, environmentally friendly ingredients and is OMRI listed. Another reason why this product is superior to most other products is that animals will not taste test the plants. Plantskydd works by emitting an odor that animals associate with predator activity, repelling them before they nibble. I spray when the temperature is above zero. In the spring, the first plants I spray are the tulips as they are emerging. This product has allowed us to grow thousands of tulips and perennials. As new growth appears or as new bloom buds appear, I will spray again for an once of prevention. After spraying, it will last for 4 months and does not wash off after a rainfall.

Another product we are trialing in the gardens at Plant Paradise Country Gardens is Bobbex. It is a new product to Canada and it is also applied by spraying, but with this product the whole plant has to be covered. Last fall we used it to protect our orchard that contains peach, pear and apple trees. So far all winter, not a single bite. We will let you know how the trial continues. We preferred using Bobbex on our fruit trees because it is not a blood based product like Plantskydd. Never spray, Plantskydd or Bobbex, on any edible fruit or vegetable. Bobbex and Plantskydd can be purchased at: Plant Paradise Country Gardens.

If you rather not bother with spraying your plants as a deterrent, I recommend planting deer resistant perennials. Of course they will taste test any plant if they are hungry enough, but they will usually stay away from plants that are either poisonous, have a strong scent, or have prickly or fuzzy foliage.
